Dr. Amitai Ziv, founder and director of the Israel Center for Medical Simulation (MSR) and Deputy Director of Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, will receive the prize at a ceremony that will take place on May 1 in New York.
The Charles Bronfman Prize Foundation annually grants a prize in recognition of specialists who are innovators in their field and whose work is helping to create a better world. Undoubtedly, Amitai Ziv's accomplishments fall under that category. Founded in 2001, MSR has become a model for many of the world's medical centers, which are today creating similar institutions.
Dr. Ziv has utilized his flight simulator experience in the Israel Air Force, applying that experience in order to develop unique methods for preparing medical students and medical personnel. Through the use of plaster casts and computer-enhanced mannequins, practical knowledge of the body's functions in complex situations can be acquired without the exposure of patients to any danger whatsoever.
MSR's methods are employed for the training of combat physicians and the screening of candidates for Tel Aviv University's medical school. With the help of simulations, the school's admissions committee can determine the extent to which a future student is psychologically prepared for the duties of a physician and for work with patients.
Dr. Ziv has delivered lectures and participated in the training of medical personnel at various university medical centers in the United States.
